Dementia Friendly Hippo
19th November 2021
Bennochy Church and halls is a Dementia Friendly Space, the Open Door Team would like to further develop our links with the Fife Council Dementia Friendly Fife Team. During recent conversations we received a request from Dementia Friendly Fife calling knitters to knit more hippos, in preparation for returning to schools in the new year. A couple of weeks ago the Dementia Friendly Fife team visited St Marie's school and 300 children undertook a dementia friends course, receiving at the end of the course, a knitted hippo to remind them of the key elements of being a dementia friend. As news travels between the schools, the Dementia Friendly Fife Team need more hippos to hand out. If anyone would like to become a Dementia Friend or have a refresher on the Dementia Friends Awareness course, please contact Louisa Turner, Development Worker. Click to see the knitting pattern. Dementia Friendly Campus HippoFife Council has appointed a Project Manager, - Ruth McCabe, to promote Fife as being Dementia Friendly. The project manager visits schools, along with members of STAND – a group of people living with younger onset dementia, who together, deliver a specialist course, for children, on becoming a dementia friend. The idea of the gift of a small hand sized hippo to be given to each child who undertakes the course is in response to STAND adopting the hippo as their mascot. A part of the brain – Hippocampus, is often affected by dementia. The STAND hippo is known as ‘Campus’. The aim is to have 1,000 hippos to hand out to the children of Fife. If you would like to help, please follow the knitting pattern instructions. The hippos are generally knitted using shades of purple wool as a link to the logo of Alzheimer Scotland. Please forward all knitted hippos to Louisa Turner. Or email Louisa for collection/drop off points. Thank you. Happy Hippo knitting!

Scottish Country Dance Class
4th September 2021
Our Scottish Country Dancing Classes will be starting soon. After COVID abruptly closed us down 18 months ago we are happy to announce that we have been given the go ahead by the Scottish Government through Sports Scotland to resume dancing without masks - great news. So, not having danced, or indeed met, for such a long time, we need to catch up not only with each other but also to work on our fitness. So our first night, Tuesday 28 September at 6pm, will be a social evening - bring your own cup please. We will get back to dancing on Tuesday 5 October at 6pm. After 18 months off our fitness levels, for dancing, are low. So we will need to build this up gently. We also need to keep safe so measures will be in place to make sure this happens. There will be plenty of sanitiser but do wear a mask to come into the hall even though we will be dancing without masks. We would be delighted to welcome new members. Scottish Country Dancing is not ceilidh dancing but we do dance in sets (very social) and a lot of the figures are the same. Beginners are very welcome - all dances are taught and we are very good at helping each other. So come along and have some FUN - we do have a laugh, especially when we deviate from the instructions (we never go wrong)! Build up your FITNESS - both physically and mentally. Make new FRIENDS - we do talk a lot and there is even a cup of tea. First things first - where are the dancing shoes!
Zambia Appeal Update
27th August 2021
We have an update from Jenny in Zambia: Thank you to those that sent to my donor account very much for your gifts, amounting to £200! This will go a long way to help the Phiri family. Just £27.00 a month helps with their basic needs, for food and shelter and you have also contributed to the school fees for Gift and Veronica this term (£29.00) This will help with their basic needs till February 2022 and probably pay January school fees for Gift and Veronica. Other news is that Grace is keeping up selling charcoal for a living, but at Cadro we are trying our hand at making charcoal briquettes out of waste agricultural materials like maize stalks, of which there are plenty lying around. If we are successful and it looks like a viable enterprise, we may teach this to Grace too, so she can supplement her income in a more sustainable way. Wishing you all a joyful harvest season on behalf of Grace, Brian, Christopher (Gift) Veronica and Prisca, and of course, from myself. Every good wish. You can also read more and donate to our Zambia 21 Appeal.

Zambia Appeal 21
10th August 2021
Over the past few years, at Harvest, Bennochy has donated money to support the work of Jenny Featherstone in Choma, Zambia. I recently asked Jenny what project we might support in 2021. This is what she said, In May I had a phone call from someone I vaguely knew in Kitwe called Precious Phiri. She was distraught and desperate because her son who was about 18, had just been killed in a road accident, she was widowed in 2009 and struggling to keep her 5 children and 3 dependants. She could not afford to pay for the coffin, so I helped her, and also a little something to start selling rice and beans in the market, as she was desperate to send 2 of her children to school. I heard from her again a couple of weeks later asking for about £3.00 for medicine for her next oldest son who was ill. Two weeks ago, I got a call from Grace, her eldest daughter, saying mum had just died in hospital this morning, leaving the 7 kids all alone as their nearest relative, a sickly uncle, lives about 5 hours away in Solwezi. Grace was still in school (having missed a few years because the family couldn't pay her secondary school fees.) She would now be in charge of the family and take over from her mother. I sent something to pay for a simple funeral for Precious, and then decided to give K700 a month, £25 roughly, 450 of which would be for rent of 3 rooms.) I also gave another small amount to help her continue the business of street market selling, as clearly, they had no surplus after the funeral. I wonder if the congregation would consider taking them on as a project? We have decided to base our Zambia Appeal 21 around helping this family. Clothes Bank
31st May 2021
We have all had a very difficult year and a half, but for some people it has caused serious hardship. Many people will be without a job for the first time in their lives and they will not know where to go for help or who to ask. As a church we need to do something to try and support our community. It was suggested to the 4 town centre churches that they come together to do something to help. We have decided to organise a clothes bank for children’s clothes. We are asking for clothes from birth to 16 years old which are still of good quality, it is not a jumble sale. We ask that they are laundered and ready to be given out as we do not have laundry facilities. We are also asking the 4 congregations to think about buying a pack of pants or socks when they do their shopping as no-one wants second-hand underwear and let’s not forget the babies who will need nappies. The “Clothes 4 Kids”, starting on the 2nd August, will be open on a Monday and Wednesday morning in the St Bryce Kirk building but is a 4 church initiative. Please consider supporting your project to support your community either by handing in new underwear or with a donation so that we can buy things that are needed. We would also like to invite people to come and help. Clothes and donations can be handed into the St Bryce Kirk building Monday – Thursday between 9am – 2pm. Thank you

21st December 2020
On Saturday evening, Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, announced stricter Coronavirus restrictions, over the Christmas period, and from Boxing day, 26th December 2020. With the whole of mainland Scotland moving into tier 4 restrictions, it means that our capacity on a Sunday morning is reduced from 46 to just 20. As this number includes the minister, organist, and welcome team, this leaves us with a very small capacity. There is an option to try and organize a booking system, but that has its own problems, and with the Scottish Government saying we need to reduce face to face contact, we have no real option but to suspend ‘in person’ Sunday worship. I will again record Sunday Reflections, to go onto the Bennochy website. Because of the tighter restrictions running through to 18th January 2021. Services will be suspended until at least the first Sunday in February. The Kirk Session will review the situation in the middle of January and decide accordingly. I realise how disappointing this news is, especially those who have been attending these past few months. However, it is important that we play our part in minimizing contact with others, and so help to reduce the spread of the virus. As soon as it is safe to do so, ‘in person’ worship will recommence. Please keep looking at the Bennochy web site for updates. Further information can be found in Robin's Christmas Letter.
